In Conversation with Cornelis Clement, Founder of Badass Blankets:

Cornelis:

I started a couple of months ago. So it’s quite new and was starting with with the new T-shirts. And then also, like anybody else, I guess, who’s entering the beauty business, but then if you go down the rabbit hole, then you see maybe better to to try to sell some high margin products, just putting in the prompt and you have to tweak it a bit and polish it and everything.

And so and I can think of some things new people are discussing that it’s not really ads, but it’s that’s not going anywhere. So then take advantage of it. But you sell T-shirts and you have a marketplace like spring or whatever, and they take the most of it and it doesn’t make sense better to have a store. And so on your own, they’re responsible for everything.

But you keep track of it.

Brett:

Welcome to our Influencers podcast. We’re talking bad ass blankets today. We’re talking bad ass woven blankets, bad ass minky blankets, bad ass beach blankets, and bad ass wall art. We’ve got Cornelius Clement here. He’s the founder of Bad Ass Blankets. So we’re going to talk about not only these products, but also opportunities for influencers to promote our analysis.

Bad ass blankets. So, Cornelius, welcome to the show. Thanks for joining us today. And we’ll get into the products in a moment. Can you kind of share what’s new on your side on the with bad ass blankets?

Cornelis:

Okay. Yeah. First of all, if things were having me being young, my company started a couple of months ago. This is quite new and that was starting with with T-shirts and and clothes and like anybody else, I guess was entering the of business. But then if you go down the rabbit hole and you see it’s maybe better to to try to sell some high margin products and also because I had some designs and it was important for me to to showcase my art kind of.

So then I stumbled upon a blanket and it’s a it’s, it’s a three now.

Brett:

So it’s your art. Cornell is on the blankets.

Cornelis:

So to be honest, it’s I generated I thought probably people who don’t know probably.

Brett:

You’re the hand behind the.

Cornelis:

Yeah it’s just putting in the prompt you have to tweak it a bit and polish it and everything and so and like everything this is something new people are discussing that it’s not really art. And it was the same. And then the movies came out. This is not like the same like, like a lot of stuff, but that’s not going anywhere.

So then take advantage of it and you don’t have to hire any designer anymore. It’s quite the lucrative stuff that’s creating art and this was the main reason why I went into the because it’s easier to to produce stuff.

Brett:

Yeah. Interesting. And then you mentioned from a margin standpoint, then you find blankets are higher margin product than just standard T or Yeah exactly.

Cornelis:

Wearables probably know if you sell T-shirts and you have a marketplace like T Spring or whatever and they take most of it and you left with three or $4 or so and you’re going to burn out before you sell t shirts, which has to do so much work into it and they’re not acceptable. So it’s a waste of time.

In the end.

Brett:

You Yeah, I understand that. So I saw you on multiple platforms in a saw on Etsy presents for you as well in addition to your Shopify store.

Cornelis:

So no, I’m not even making T-shirts. You have to kind of Etsy with bubble tea, spring, whatever to sell to take a really big part of the income round and blessed with pennies more or less. And it doesn’t make sense to me also. That’s the question. Do you have a store or do you do it on marketplaces? And because I want to have my own or keep my data and my clients and whatever else anyway, but I do have a store and so on your own, they’re responsible for everything.

But then you keep the profit. And most. Most of it.

Brett:

Yeah, right. That’s the way that’s the way to do it. And I know the challenge, which I appreciate. If you haven’t gone through a few times myself, is always that demand generation. How do you get the customers first to the so the website right and the buy So with that as buying goods then we’re turning it to influencers.

It’s in your collab and I know you’ve had an affiliate program going for a little while, so tell us about that. What have you done so far in terms of your affiliate program and then what are we looking for in terms of our collab and potential applicants from the influencer side?

Cornelis:

Also, to be honest. So I started with affiliated into influencer a few weeks ago. So before I did some paid advertising, some organic research and native ads and so on was okay. Still not profitable yet, but that’s okay. Yeah.

Brett:

With those that where those AdWords like I can Google Google AdWords to.

Cornelis:

Keyword it’s it’s okay about the things you have to put to put a bit of budget into it with the one with $20 per day. We don’t get very far with this because competition is there to spending more. So you don’t get to Sean I guess so. An opinion for this for the kind of products I do, but I think influencer affiliates would be the best audience people can see the product it seems to be and influence if you can relate to the products and it’s more likely then you can also build the community more or less.

This also kind of the going up make the easy sale so better. Have a community with like minded people like stuff into them are going to to to buy again or be connected to the brand somehow and this is I guess probably best way to do this with the influencer.

Brett:

With yeah for sure. Right. To get the repeat buyers as you said the problem with some of these paying online right. And you’re paying per click and the $20 I’m sure I know it evaporates like that because Facebook and people are happy that they’re happy to track. They’re happy to charge your credit card for whatever your budget is.

It’s amazing They’ll they’ll hit the full car. But to get like you mentioned, to get the repeat customers right, to get the community where the young people are into your product and and and buying on a repeat a basis. So from the setup side then for influencers who are watching this, listening to this, it’s a commission opportune any that we have with that ass blankets.

Cornelis:

Are both getting gifts the temple of course so you can see for yourself what can be. And of course you should own as well if you if you put into hard work. So then I’m offering a commission structure as well and working on the top systems with it. You get to others for your hard work, so you bring more customers and then you earn more.

And in the end, of course, with the app, this is how actually it works. I guess if would influence of how.

Brett:

Yeah, 100%. And we will get the link to your collab here in the show notes so our influencer influencers can apply and you’ll be able to click the link to the Badass Blankets collab and then just say I’m interested and then we’ll send a note over to our analyst to review your application and hopefully get you proves you can start chatting back and forth about that.

What types of influencers are you looking for specifically for the effort here?

Cornelis:

Now let’s I guess must be in the home décor niche for sure, but also this different home décor can be everything can be the ranch in Texas that’s 55 year old mom and also lost in New York or whatever. So yeah, he for sure. And then we have to see if it’s a kid. So I guess because some designs are probably not for anybody.

So I think even the home the commission should be should be relevant for both. So I look at the content of the influencer. The influencer looks at my, my, my page, and if you both can find a way to work together with I guess what anything, because you never know who’s who’s buying the answer. So we at least the home decor which maybe some outside would make sense to her.

Brett:

Yeah, there’s an excellent opportunity and very, very unique product with unique designs here and then also nicer to get a higher commission and potentially a product sample as Cornell’s here. So we will get the again, link to the collab here for bad ass blankets generally online. Then Cornell is how can people follow and connect with that as blankets in terms of social media?

Cornelis:

Have an Instagram handle? Of course Facebook page and look what’s going on there right now or is going to change now, but just maybe with an email or Instagram, DM, Facebook, whatever. My phone number is also my website. So many ways.

Brett:

I love that. Yeah, I love the personal touch. Once you hear about pages like, Hey guys, it’s me, it’s Cornelius, we’re talking bad ass blankets, which is great. You go to a lot of stores and many Shopify stores. They look nice and there’s no personality there.

Cornelis:

So when it’s important to connect with your consumers, as you said.

Brett:

So Exactly. Exactly. Which is why we do these. And it was great having you on, Cornell. So we were able to introduce you to our influencers and get a feel for bad ass blankets and get to see the man behind the blanket.
