Social media platforms have become an integral part of our lives, connecting millions of individuals worldwide. As one of the leading platforms for sharing photos, videos, and engaging with a global community, Instagram continues to grow in popularity. However, with this growth comes the increasing prevalence of fake accounts. These fake profiles, posts, and followers can distort engagement metrics, mislead brands, and undermine the credibility of influencers. Recognizing fake Instagram accounts is crucial for maintaining the integrity of your online presence.

Fake IG accounts are in fact, one of the biggest problems the platform is faced with. You’ve probably come across a fake account or post if you’ve spent any amount of time on Instagram. But may not have recognized any of the posts or accounts on Instagram as fake.

According to a recent study by cybersecurity firm Cheq, approximately 95 million bot accounts infest Instagram, accounting for around 9.5% of the platform’s total user base. This is a staggering statistic, and it means one thing: users and brands need to be more vigilant than ever on social media.

Deceptive accounts pose a serious threat to users, as they could lead to scams, identity theft, and invasion of privacy. Another growing concern is that fake users often dupe unsuspecting brands into believing their accounts are managed by genuine influencers who can help them promote their products and services.

Why is There a Growing Number of Fake Instagram Accounts?

The main reason for fake Instagram accounts is the importance placed on the number of followers an account has. And the difficult process of acquiring those followers organically. The individuals who buy fake accounts with high follower counts are simply looking for a faster way to measure up to the competition without putting in the work.

And they don’t just stop there. These fake Instagram users go on to create fake posts. Sometimes making up stories or more commonly—pretend to be someone they are not. There is a multitude of reasons why someone would create fake Instagram accounts and posts. In some cases, they are looking to scam their followers into making purchases of non-existent products.

However, one of the growing issues we have been seeing is when fake Instagram accounts with fake postings and stories, are being used to dupe unsuspecting brands. In what way? By fooling these brands into thinking that these fake accounts are managed by genuine Instagram influencers who can help them promote their products and services.

Whatever the reasons are for people creating a fake Instagram post or even a fake Instagram account, it’s just important to remember that they are out there!

We are not going to cover the reasons why these folks resort to these scammy tactics. We’ll dedicate a future post to doing that. Instead, today, we’re going to teach you how to recognize a fake Instagram account and post when you see one.

The Effects of Fake Instagram Accounts on Businesses and Brands

Companies and brands that partner with influencers invest in the influencer’s platform and the level of trust that the influencer’s followers have in them. A lot of companies are willing to pay top dollar to work with influencers who are relevant to their brand. And influencers with a large following in the hopes that this will result in a larger audience and an expanded customer base.

This means that businesses that are taken in by fake accounts with large follower numbers are effectively being scammed and losing out on their investment. Fake Instagram accounts can have a significant impact on both individuals and businesses. For brands, partnering with influencers who have fake followers can lead to ineffective marketing campaigns and wasted budgets. Fake engagement metrics can distort the perceived reach and influence of an account, making it difficult to measure genuine audience interest. For influencers, fake followers can harm their credibility and relationships with brands. Recognizing fake Instagram accounts helps ensure that interactions and collaborations are genuine, fostering trust and authentic engagement within the community.

So, how can your brand avoid fake Instagram accounts and collaborate with powerful and genuine influencers?

A low number of posts, lack of engagement on the account, and an imbalanced follower-to-following ratio are some telltale signs of fake accounts on Instagram. The bottom line is that spotting a fake account requires careful attention to detail and observant social media practices.

In this article, we’ll delve deeper into the world of fake accounts on Instagram, exploring additional telltale signs and strategies to recognize and avoid them. By being aware, users and brands can safeguard their online presence and enjoy a more secure and authentic social media experience.

We want you to learn how you can avoid falling for these scams. So here are a few tips to help you recognize fake Instagram accounts and posts.

Tips for Recognizing Fake Instagram Accounts and Posts

These tips will help make you wiser for the next time you scroll through Instagram accounts. However, we’d like to remind you that there are some cases where an Instagram account or post may show all signs of being fake but they are 100% real.

So the best thing we can suggest is first to understand how to spot these fakers. Then use your own judgment as to how you wish to proceed.

Let’s say you’re a brand looking to partner with reputable Instagram influencers. But you come across what you believe to be a fake account based on what you will learn here. Then the simple approach is to completely skip past the suspect account. After all, if you think they’re fake, then chances are their followers will think they’re fake. So they would have very little chance of having any success promoting your brand and products.

Now get your pen and paper out. Here are the tips to help you spot fake Instagram accounts and posts.

1. Fake Instagram Account Bios

Since fake Instagram accounts are usually trying to copy a real account and draw in followers they will make their profile photo a picture of an attractive man or woman often in a state of undress. They’re hoping that this photo will make the account seem more attractive and interesting to those who stumble upon it. However, if you take a look at their posts, the person from the profile photo will be nowhere to be found.

It’s not uncommon to also use pictures of models or celebrities, or not to have a profile picture at all. Not everyone who makes fake IG profiles bother to make them look organic. Another thing you should take a look at is the bio. It will often have unrealistic promises or an outlandish background story.

An Instagram bio with incomplete profile information is a big red flag. Keep in mind that a fake account owner may not want to reveal their true identity, so they may not fill out their profile information completely or include a profile photo. Here are a few other ways to spot a potentially fake Instagram account from the bio:

Inconsistent or copied bio:

Fake Instagram accounts often copy bios from real accounts but may have changes and inconsistencies. For example, an extra letter, number, or symbol may be added to the bio.

Follows a high number of accounts:

Pay attention to the number of accounts the profile is following. Fake accounts often follow a significant number of accounts to make themselves look legitimate.

Suspicious username:

Take a closer look at the username in the bio. In some cases, the username may not match the person’s name on the profile – a red flag for a fake account.

Outlandish claims:

If the bio features unrealistic promises or an outlandish background story, you can be reasonably sure the account has been created to dupe unsuspecting users and brands.

2. Fake Instagram Posts

We’ve already mentioned that a fake account won’t have the person in their profile picture in any other posts. If they mention a profession in their bio, the posts usually won’t be related to that field. These disparities should be fairly easy to spot even from a quick glance through their profile.

If you want to go further into confirming whether the IG account is fake take a look at:

Post frequency and time frame: Take note of how frequently the user posts and the time frame in which most posts are made. Many fake profiles are very eager to achieve their goal of monetizing the profile as quickly as possible. To that end, they typically share several posts in a very short time frame to make the account seem populated.

Low engagement: While there may be many posts on the page if you notice the posts have very little activity, are often unrelated, or even downright strange, it could be a fake profile.

3. Fake Instagram Followers

This is one of the best indicators that an Instagram account is fake. An imbalance in the follower-to-following ratio is a telltale sign that you’re dealing with a fake account. A follow ratio of 0.5 or less (following two or more accounts for every one follower), is often considered a bad ratio and can be associated with spammy behavior.

Here are two more signs to look out for:

Unrealistic follower count: A profile with only 10 posts is very unlikely to have gained 10K followers organically. This could indicate that the follower count has been artificially inflated by buying followers or using bots to generate fake accounts that follow the profile.

Extremely high “following” number: Fake Instagram accounts often max out the following feature at around 7,500. However, remember to consider other factors, along with the follower count, to determine the authenticity of an account. Look for engagement levels, such as likes, comments, and the quality of followers’ profiles, to assess an account’s credibility.

Use an App to Spot Fake Instagram Accounts & Scammers

Brands invest significant time, effort, and money into influencer marketing campaigns. So when a brand is duped by a fake influencer there’s a lot at stake. Fortunately, several tools and Instagram apps are created specifically to help brands determine whether an account is real or fake. These apps use statistics and authentication technology to verify whether an account is real or not. The best part – they are available for free or relatively cheap in your phone’s app store.

HypeAuditor: HypeAuditor offers a free Instagram Audit tool that can be used to spot fake followers and analyze the authenticity of an influencer’s audience and engagement rates.

Social Blade: Social Blade is a platform that provides analytics and statistics for YouTube, Twitch, and Instagram. It can help identify sudden spikes in followers or engagement, which may indicate fake followers or activity.

Alternatively, partnering with a trusted influencer-management platform like Afluencer could be the way to go. Whether you’re looking for beauty, tech, or health influencers (or even influencers from another niche), the platform can connect you with reliable, verified, and authentic influencers for your next brand campaign.

How to Find Genuine Instagram Influencers

Finding genuine Instagram influencers for your brand campaign can be a critical step in ensuring a successful marketing strategy.

Firstly, it’s essential to define your target audience and understand their demographics and interests. This will help you identify influencers whose followers align with your brand. Research relevant hashtags related to your niche or industry. Use Instagram’s search function to explore posts, accounts, and hashtags; it can help you discover influencers already discussing subjects related to your brand.

It’s also a good idea to dive into the influencer’s comment section to spot real engagement. Look for meaningful conversations, authentic interactions, and positive sentiment. Once you’ve identified potential influencers who match your brand, send a personalized message. Discuss campaign details and expectations and negotiate compensation if necessary.

Afluencer is a leading marketing resource platform that can help you find and collaborate with top social media influencers. The platform enables brands to search by interests, requirements, channels, and more.

Protecting Your Brand with Afluencer

To safeguard your brand against fake accounts and ensure genuine engagement, partnering with a platform like Afluencer can be highly beneficial. Afluencer connects brands with real influencers, offering several key advantages:

You know influencer marketing is getting big when all these crazy myths start popping up! If your scales are still not quite tipped toward jumping on the bandwagon because of all the negative facts, then listen up.

Now is the best time to get your foot in the influencer marketing pool. The number of social media users and the time spent on these platforms skyrocketed during the pandemic. What do you expect? Nobody went to work or left their homes. How else were they supposed to burn away their precious seconds?

What happened next?

The headcount of influencers began to rise at an incredible rate. It was as though EVERYONE wanted to be an influencer. And so it brought all kinds of influencer pedigrees.

You have the individuals who THINK they were influencers. Then you have the folks who do actually influence their audiences but they refuse to be called influencers. And then you have the scammy characters who PRETEND to be influencers.

So, everyone is talking, writing, thinking, singing, screaming, and walking influencer marketing. And as you would expect from a planet full of influencer-related content, there are going to be misguided facts out there.

Therefore, without further ado, we present to you the 10 most ridiculous myths about influencer marketing.

Influencer Marketing Myths: The Truth Revealed

Here’s a quick look at the myths we will be talking about today:

#1 Makeup Artists Have All The Success

While makeup artists are very popular on social media (in particular Instagram and TikTok), you can still find success in other niches such as:

Health

Fitness

Travel

Gaming

And that barely scratches the surface of all the potential industries you can get your influencer hands mixed up in. Remember, people seek advice and entertainment for all sorts of things.

Not too long ago, the term, “just Google it” was always on the tip of everyone’s tongue. Now you tend to hear a lot of, “try checking on Instagram”. And that’s not just for watching funny pet videos, people are turning to social media to check out restaurant reviews, buy wedding outfits, master a new recipe, learn to change a light switch, and just pretty much anything!

And so the influencers arrive!

Just hop on over to our app and browse our catalog of talent influencers who you’ll find creating all kinds of content on social media.

Take Gabriela Paxton for example. A loving parent and wife, who’s also a proud business owner and also submerges herself in the land of beauty and fashion.

Gabriela Paxton’s Instagram Posts

#2 Instagram Is The Only Platform You Need

Instagram is one of the most active social media apps out there. And the inclusion of #hashtags really does make a difference when it comes to promoting content.

However, it’s not the only platform you need to focus on in order to be successful with influencer marketing.

Take some time to explore other options such as:

TikTok – exploded in the past couple of years.

Facebook – still dominates the top of the castle.

LinkedIn – growing fast and is used by many business professionals.

YouTube – continues to control the majority of the video content market.

There are loads of creators on Afluencer who build their influencing empires on multiple social platforms. And if you check out our app, you’ll notice that they get to share their social media handles in their profiles. We actually strongly recommend that you do that because it allows us to extract valuable follower and engagement insights.

Why is it so important to display your social media insights?

BRANDS.

They want to see this data. It helps them to compare influencers and ultimately find the perfect person to partner with. So when you sign up to Afluencer (we have both free and premium options), don’t forget to connect your socials!

Casey-Michelle does a fantastic job of managing multiple platforms as she influences her audiences with content on lifestyle, wellness, and travel.

Casey-Michelle’s YouTube Videos

You need to carve a niche on the platform that you are most comfortable using and where you find the most of your followers.

YouTube, for example, can be a good platform to start if you are good at making vlogs or video tutorials. In fact, many influencers merely post previews on Instagram, asking followers to watch the entire video on YouTube.

This is because YouTube generates more traffic (and also revenue in some cases) as it is now the second-largest search engine out there.

#3 Fake Followers Are A Must To Do Well

Let’s face it. It isn’t easy to spot a fake account. Even when you do suspect foul play, can you ever really be sure? When it comes to fake accounts, most people talk about Instagram. So let’s follow through using the Instagram platform as our guinea pig.

What sorts of things classify an Instagram account as being fake?

There are four main things that raise red flags:

A fake bio (a random picture of somebody or something will often be used).

Stolen posts (both images and videos).

Fake followers (usually bought online).

Likes and comments are generated by computer programs aka bots.

There are still loads of people out there trying to get their hands on fake followers and even fake accounts. But don’t be fooled by the notion of a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. There is absolutely nothing good that will come out of growing an IG account with a whole load of fakeness.

You WILL get busted. And all those brand partnerships that you’ve been dreaming of… down the drain!

Brands have a huge selection of tools at their disposal to help them spot a fake Instagram account in the haystack. Many of these tools are free to use and pretty accurate.

The whole deal with fake followers is one of the main reasons why many brands refuse to work with influencers. They are just not ready to lose a great deal of time and money should they land a fake.

So if you’re looking to make a career out of being an influencer, then don’t tarnish the name. Stay away from fake followers, comments, and the rest of the lineup.

Grow your social media accounts organically. Yes, it may take longer than buying bots, but in the long run, you will be standing at the top of the hill.

If you want to know more about spotting fake accounts, check out the article below.

#4 Global Audiences Are A Necessity

Technically speaking, the more followers you have, the better it is for your business. And having a global audience does indeed help to expand those numbers. However, the idea that recruiting international audiences is one of the pillars of a successful influencer marketing campaign is just another myth.

Having a niche presence, for example, is very powerful when it comes to growing your following. Major brands like Puma and DHL have used local influencers (with local followers) in order to market their products.

So don’t feel overwhelmed by the thought that you are going to have to climb every mountain, and swim every river to bring success to your influencer mission.

It’s just not true.

#5 You Can’t Handle It On Your Own

Influencer marketing can be a full-time job but it doesn’t mean you need to assemble a crew to take it on. Pure passion, creative skills, and sheer hard work will be your winning qualities.

However, like any thriving business, you will at some point need to start hiring extra pairs of hands. Perhaps you’ll be looking to employ managers to look over your many social media projects or a web developer if you decide it’s time to build an online store.

But regardless of how insanely busy your business becomes, remember to never stop connecting with your followers. That personal connection holds more value than anything else.

If you’re looking for a great way to manage your valuable time while looking for brand Collabs, your best bet would be to register with Afluencer.

We are home to loads of great brands waiting for you to manage their influencer marketing. Check out Frazy below. They run the world’s first virtual cafe. How awesome is that?!

They’re looking for coffee influencers and are ready to pay up to $150 per post. But hey, if coffee is not your jam, there are other great brands for you to consider.

#6 Text Is So Last Year

There is one thing in life that makes us all equal. We all have 24 hours in our day. So it is understandable when the world gets busier, for us to find information that’s quick and easy to digest.

And that is why there is this whole myth about people only being interested in looking at images and watching videos. Nobody has time to be reading those essay-length Instagram captions, right?

Wrong!

The reality is that people LOVE to read. They crave those detailed IG captions. They’re there for the 7-paragraph response in the comments section. Surprisingly, people DO actually have time to read what you have to say.

So when you travel to the island of St. Lucia in the Caribbean and post on Instagram a picture of yourself sunbathing on the gorgeous beach – don’t just drop, “beach” in the captions.

Go crazy! Tell your followers what it feels like. And don’t miss out on the opportunity to share the deliciousness of the seafood platter you gobbled down only 2 minutes ago.

We love to read. You’re reading this, right?

The other important thing about using text is that it helps with the whole algorithm of social media. You do want these social platforms to boost your posts to the top, don’t you?

#7 Start An Online Store

The likes of Huda Kattan and Bradley Martyn may inspire you to open your own store. But if you’re starting as a micro-influencer or even a nano-influencer, taking on an online store is not going to be an easy feat.

Firstly, you need to have an idea about how the mechanics of a store works. And even when you do get to grips with the whole operation, you have to remember, now you have a store to run AND followers to entertain.

So yeah, sure enough, there are pros to opening up a shop – like the added income it delivers, but it is also heavy on the cons. For example, what happens if your online shop gets hacked? And what if you put in all those sleepless nights but you’re just not landing those sales?

If you have a huge number of potential buyers (like your loyal followers on social), then go for it. But take your time before jumping on that store. Have a few sits downs and walk through the whole idea of running the store. And once you are truly ready to take that leap, then open those shop doors!

You know, before influencer marketing started to become a big deal, it was all about affiliate marketing. And with affiliates, it was all about setting up shop. But now with the growth of social media, you can sell your own items or promote the products of a brand in a single Facebook post.

So this whole myth about making it big in influencer marketing by opening a shop, that’s just crazy talk!

#8 Losing Followers Means Game Over

It’s okay to lose followers – everyone from Kim Kardashian to Dwayne Johnson loses followers. It’s a part of the game.

It is certainly a good idea to keep an eye on your social media analytics. But just don’t let the number get you down. Consistency is the key to success. As long as you are consistently creating the content that both you and your followers dig, then there’s no reason why you should fail.

By the way, did you know that most of these celebrity influencers have a huge number of fake followers? So don’t go comparing your follower numbers with others. Play your own game.

However, if you notice that your follower count is consistently going down, then it may be a good idea to sit down and look at your strategy. Maybe it has nothing to do with your efforts. It could even be a glitch on the social platform that you are using. But either way, any alarming data pertaining to your influencing efforts need to be addressed.

#9 A Game Only For Business to Consumer

Influencer marketing is intended only for business-to-consumer – myth or fact?

Myth! It’s for everyone. Whether you’re an individual or managing a business-to-business gig, influencer marketing can be configured to work in your favor.

Yes, we’re going to talk about the Afluencer app again. Just take a look at the diversity of brands and influencers. For example, did you ever know that HR influencers were a thing?

We created a content piece on our HR influencers which you can check out HERE.

Companies are always on the lookout for all kinds of influencers. Some want to reach consumers and others want to reach businesses. So you can expect collab requirements to vary tremendously between brands.

The kind of attention you get largely depends on your personal/brand image and the number of followers backing you. Work on carving a niche that suits you and your desired audience and you will have no reasons to worry.

#10 Wait For Brands To Reach Out

Brands will not know you exist unless you are big. That is a fact. That stuff you read about having to wait for brands to contact you for your influencer marketing gig – is a myth.

So please don’t sit around waiting for those brand deals to drop on your lap. You need to make the first move. Especially if you’re only just getting your foot into the door. But maintain a professional approach. Take some time to plan your sales pitch.

Let brands know why they should have you as their online brand ambassador. Make sure to highlight factors such as your reach and followers.

We strongly suggest that you create an influencer media kit. What is that you ask? How do you create a media kit?

Glad you asked!

Go study our guide, What is an Influencer Media Kit?

There you have it! Next time you hear some crazy story about influencer marketing, remember, it may just be a myth. Take any advice you read or hear about with a pinch of salt.

Now go out there and grow your business!

One unfortunate reality of the influencer marketing world is the continuing problem with fraudulent influencers. There are many ways in which influencer fraud can occur, but purchasing followers looks to be the most prevalent strategy. In this type of fraud, the influencer will artificially increase their number of followers, use bots, paid followers, or take part in influencer pods built for this purpose.

In addition to artificially increasing their follower number, they will also purchase engagement in the same way. Trading likes and comments with the influencer pod community or using bots that leave likes and generic comments.

Opportunistic Scammers

It’s easy to see why they do it; being an influencer can be a lucrative opportunity but building a substantial following takes time and hard work. However, the influencers that practice this type of fraudulent behavior are effectively scamming the brands who work with them.

A brand will partner with an influencer to expand its own audience, and attract interest in its products or services. A brand is just wasting time and money if it’s paying inflated prices to collab based on fake follower numbers.

Awareness Will Save You From Fraud

Instagram has tried to combat this issue in several ways. However, those who still insist on carrying out this type of fraud always find a way around the measures put in place. This is why it’s important to be able to recognize influencer fraud so that you can avoid it.

One of the most obvious signs an influencer is artificially inflating their audience numbers by buying their followers is sudden spikes in the number of followers they have. It’s very unlikely that someone’s Instagram following can go from 2K to 5K overnight. Before starting to work with an influencer spend some time tracking the growth of their following. Make sure it is rising organically.

Know Their Followers

Another important sign of influencer fraud is a suspicious ratio of comments and likes when you compare it to their followers. An account with a low follower count but very high levels of comments and likes is likely to purchase auto-generated comments. Many of the comments will be irrelevant to the content, with extremely generic phrases or strings of emojis. These types of comments are one of the surest signs that they came from bots rather than actual people.

The best way to make sure that the influencers you’re working with are genuine is to look beyond the standard engagement rates one would use to gauge the effectiveness that a certain influencer will have. Instead, take into consideration other metrics. Such as story views, affiliate codes, or sticker taps. These will help paint a more realistic picture of the type of exposure and engagement your campaign can achieve.

If you take care to recognize and avoid influencer fraud your brand will be able to use its influencer marketing budget on forming partnerships that will build brand awareness, drive traffic and establish a relationship with your customers that is built on trust.

It’s almost like a rule in the business world that wherever money starts flowing, crackpots show up who try to pass themselves off as experts when they really don’t know anything at all.

It’s the same case with the social media influencer industry. Every day red flags go up and people come up to us saying that they signed up with a fake influencer. And now they want us to fix the mess. While digital marketing and digital business promotion are incredibly successful, it’s still nascent with respect to regulatory intervention that can prevent fraud.

It’s also one of the reasons why the demand for fake Instagram followers continues to rise over the years.

For these reasons, it’s better if you keep a lookout for yourself before someone scams you out of a fair bit of money without any results to show for it. Considering the growing importance and the sums of money flowing into the industry, it’s probably safe to assume that there are at least a few thousand dollars of yours tied into your marketing budget.

Before you hand out this money to someone, look out for these red flags of potential influencer fraudsters.

Shady Engagement Rates

The typical Instagram influencer has a likes to followers ratio of 1:3, i.e. one for every three followers. Some influencers have higher ratios but that’s because they have relatively fewer followers—it’s more of a mathematical difference than an actual indicator of the demand for their content.

It’s a red flag for sure if your influencer has insanely high engagement rates. They make you think that their content is brilliant. But it’s just because they’ve bought the following rather than generating it organically.

Go through your influencer’s feeds to see what their engagement rates look like—if they’re consistently high, then either they’re the Messiahs of social media or they’re faking it.

They Don’t Have Enough Content

Another big red flag is if you find Instagram or Facebook influencer accounts that have a huge following but very little content. That’s a fake account straight off the bat. How can someone generate this large a following but have nothing for these followers to engage with?

Check What Kind of Engagement They’re Getting

If you find influencer accounts with really weird comments on their posts that make no sense, this is a clear red flag. They’re more than likely working with fake followers. These comments are actually bots posting these comments to boost their engagement figures. Whenever you approach an influencer for your marketing, make sure to give their posts a cursory glance. Check to see if the interactions look genuine or not.

It’s not easy to become a real influencer. As not everyone has the ability or the patience to organically build a following. Especially with individuals who share their mindset and values. And then considered a leader among them. However, while not everyone can achieve it, anyone can try. Unfortunately, this has led to the rise of influencer pods. Offering a second chance to those who may not do so well in the influencer world all by themselves. Influencer pods are a shortcut and dishonest way to gain followers.

So, what exactly are influencer pods?

An influencer pod is at its most basic a forum that can be either private or public. And is found mainly on platforms such as Facebook, Telegram, and WhatsApp. On this forum, individuals work together to increase their social media following and engagement by exchanging likes, comments and follows. There are pods for many different groups and niches such as beauty, fashion, travel, and fitness; or they may be a mix of several different types of people.

Rules and Guidelines

Since the pods target individuals who are looking to increase their social media following, every pod comes with its own set of guidelines and rules. And all members must follow them. Failure to follow the rules will result in a ban.

These rules can vary among influencer pods, but they’re all usually based on the same ideas. This can be something like regulating the exchange of likes, comments, and follows by setting rules for the number of daily likes, a follow-for-follow rule, or various content limitations.

In most groups, there will be a daily thread focusing on likes, follows, or comments. The thread will be active for several hours and all members of the group can participate until the thread closes.

All threads have their own guidelines. Created either by individuals within the group. Those asking for likes or follows while promising to return the favor to anyone who participates. Or created by the group admins as a place for all members to promote their own pages. Where they ask for likes or comments and let others know what they can expect in return.

Since we started talking about threads, you may want to go explore our detailed Influencer’s Guide to Threads. You know, Twitter’s rival app.

Telegram Pods

Most Facebook influencer pods are public, so those who want to keep their participation in pods more private choose to use Telegram pods, as Telegram offers its users the ability to send messages on a heavily encrypted cloud-based server. They will often announce a new Telegram pod on Facebook or WhatsApp. And the members get instructions on how to join the new pod.

The new groups formed within Telegram pods have their own guidelines that all members are expected to follow. A common requirement for entry into a Telegram pod is for all members to follow the social media accounts of all admins. Additionally, most of these pods focus on making fake engagement look real. So they will have rules requiring comments to be a certain length and relevant to the post. This is because generic, one-word comments are a dead giveaway that an influencer is bartering or buying likes and comments. There are many rules set in place in influencer pods designed to hide the evidence of dishonest activity.

Influencer pods, although dishonest, may not seem so bad until you take into consideration that they’re in fact very similar to ad fraud. The biggest victims of pods are brands and companies that are paying a large amount to someone who they think will help them reach their target audience. Many companies are willing to pay significant amounts of money to an influencer they think will have an impact, and this impact is often based on the follower number and engagement rate that influencer has. If the engagement rate and follower count are fake, then the company is essentially being scammed.
