<p>This should be common sense, but it’s never a good idea to talk about things you have no idea about. If you don’t know anything about world politics, religions, or social theory, the best thing you can say about them is nothing.</p>



<p>A good example would be our own former President suggesting “rogue killers” when the whole Jamal Khashoggi thing went down. It was the worst move in the history of bad moves: Not because the Saudi <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/av/world-middle-east-46228344" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">officials basically repeated</a> what Trump had “suggested,” but because the <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-49826905" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Turkish intelligence</a> completely decimated that claim. In the end, you had the US President say something—on the record—that the <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/national-security/cia-concludes-saudi-crown-prince-ordered-jamal-khashoggis-assassination/2018/11/16/98c89fe6-e9b2-11e8-a939-9469f1166f9d_story.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">CIA later refuted</a>.</p>



<p>Sure, influencers aren’t presidents and don’t have national responsibilities, but you represent a business enterprise. You carry their values for them. Don’t put them in a tricky situation by speaking when you should have remained silent.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-speaking-about-experiences-you-don-t-have">Speaking About Experiences You Don’t Have</h2>



<p>We’ve seen this one too many times. From men passing remarks about abortion and menstruation to white people discussing whether or not violence meted out to black people is justified. <p>Unless you’re advocating <em>against</em> war, it’s better not to say anything at all. Even if you think a certain war was needed. Even if you strongly feel about these things, based on personal experience or prejudice, it’s better to keep mum when you’re in the public eye.</p>

To make matters worse, she also proceeded to <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/entertainment/celebrities/2019/08/12/priyanka-chopra-spars-with-angry-fan-beautycon/1984877001/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">gaslight a person</a> asking tough questions. In the influencer world, this is how influencers lose cred at the speed of light.</p>

Whether it’s a shoddily strewn-together storyline in The Irregulars that relies heavily on its Asian leads or the hilarious <a href="https://www.vox.com/22178125/bridgerton-netflix-review-regency-romance" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">attempt at history erasure in <em>Bridgerton</em></a>—token representation is everywhere. And very little of it is any good.</p>

<p>Every time you see Priyanka Chopra in a movie, ask yourself this:</p>



<p>Is her character integral to the plot or is she just a background token Indian character for brownie points? Because usually, it’s for brownie points. We’d suggest you stay away from token representation—and opt for the only other alternative: <em>meaningful </em>representation.</p>

<p>The problem with token representation is that it’s all good for Twitter twaddle. But will it get you ahead in business? Is it wise to get a plus-sized model who has no intention of not being plus-sized if you’re selling diet food?</p>



<p><em>Understanding </em>your audience is key to selecting the right representative. If you’re selling Curly Hair products, getting a white woman with straight hair is a bad idea—so on and so forth.</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list"><li>Creating an <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/marks-and-spencer-lgbt-sandwich-receives-mixed-reactions-2019-5" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">LGBT sandwich</a> that’s an acronym for Lettuce, Guacamole, Bacon, and Tomato.</li><li>Create a green campaign and act as the <a href="https://law2.wlu.edu/deptimages/journal%20of%20energy,%20climate,%20and%20the%20environment/7%20-%20Cherry%20Sneirson%20Article.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">savior of the environment</a>, and simultaneously be an oil company.</li><li>Bake <a href="https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2019/04/11/gender-neutral-gingerbread-person-launched-supermarket-ask-public/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">gender-neutral gingerbread. . . persons</a><a href="https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2019/04/11/gender-neutral-gingerbread-person-launched-supermarket-ask-public/"></a>.</li><li>Introduce a line of <a href="https://www.vox.com/the-goods/2019/5/2/18527110/burger-king-unhappy-meals-steakumms-sad-brand-twitter" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Pissed Meals</a>—because people don’t have to be happy all the time, and Happy Meals are not inclusive enough.</li></ul>



<p>These, and many others, are a good practical demonstration of the finding that most Americans use only 10% of their brains. We hope you don’t plan on being part of that statistic.</p>

<p>It was a small campaign where they joined hands with a bunch of influencers, such as <a href="https://www.instagram.com/weworewhat" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label=" (opens in a new tab)">Danielle Bernstein</a>, to help market their product to the world.</p>



<p>They made a short workout video featuring Danielle. The video was full of shout-outs to Fiji Water and talked about the importance of water while subtly plugging in the company.</p>



<p>While exact figures are not available, it&#8217;s believed that the campaign gave the company a huge boost. It shows how influencer marketing can be used to change the brand image.</p>
